Seems like the heat is working well for the miniature painting community. July was full of new minis, iniatiatives and cool ideas all around!

• Olfo Fast Feet by Emuse: Seems like Enrique really has the trick to paint extraordinary halflings and dwarves.

• Papa Jambo bust, Big Child Creatives: Probably the coolest paintjob I saw this month. Marc Masclans is on fire! The sculpture is a work from Hugo Briones.


• Anonymous bust by Francesco Farabi: Franciuus version of Banshee's bust. Also part of the project to raise money for Poppy. What a cool paintjob!


• Jomarthbay the allmighty and his brilliant mustaches by Kirill Kanaev: Kirill also paints Banshee's bust and creates his unique and all personal crazy version that will blow your mind!


• Draconia warrioress by Bohun: Bohun also collaborates in Poppy's fundraising project with this impressively painted miniature from Draconia. Great silver NMM!

Painting using another model as a reference (second part)

When something like this happens to you, it is probably one of the times when you feel proudest of what you do. May that be a hobby, your profession, or a way of seeing life. Some weeks ago, my friend Dani surprised me with his version of the already legendary Éowyn from The Lord of the Rings (Games Workshop), using exactly the same colours that I used when I painted them a few years ago.

This reminded me of something that happened to me already with the Ork Nob in 2011. Manu del Toro painted a version of this Ork using mine, from 2008, as a reference. Now it is Dani who does something similar with Éowyn, from 2010. The same way as with Manu at the time, I wanted to invite Dani to the blog so he could tell us briefly how his experience was when using the miniature of another painter as a reference, something that I personally recommend everyone, especially those who are starting to make their way into miniature painting.

Dani published a thorough article on how he painted and based Éowyn, you can check it out here. Let's see what Dani has to tell us about his experience.

Volomir: Why did you decide to paint an Éowyn in those colours?

Dani: When I still did not paint and only played Warhammer, I visited different miniature painting blogs that caught my eye, much more even than the game itself. I could also attend some Golden Demon contests. Back then I was only interested in the gaming part of the Games Day but I also went to see the miniatures of the contest in the display cabinets. When you take a look around you always fix your attention on one miniature, in this case it was the Éowyn you painted, and I knew that some day I would paint one very similar. I always wanted to have this miniature painted in the same colours in my cabinet, and since I knew you were not going to give it to me, I had to paint it! :)

Volomir: How was the process of painting the miniature?

Dani: In general, I had a great time painting this miniature. I am very happy with the result because it is quite difficult to paint a miniature of this size. It's a very small miniature and if to this you add the fact that I have not painted many girls so far, then it proves to be even more difficult. The construction and painting of the scene was not very clear on my part because from the first moment on I had in my mind a scene with snow and a tree with red leaves that would contrast with the white. Along the process I realized that it would be much better without snow, showing the different tones of the elements in the base as you can see in the image. I think that the most important thing is to enjoy the process, have a great time painting and doing it with miniatures that motivate you.

Volomir: Did you face any complication when trying to achieve the exact colours?

Dani: To me it seems impossible to get the exact colours of a miniature. I tried to follow a similar scheme, like in the skirt, the vest and the colour of the hair. The biggest complication was trying to get colours for the hair. This colour was very complicated for me to get and as you can see, it has nothing to do with yours. Lighting and definition of each of the hair locks was very complicated for me.

Volomir: ¿Qué has sacado en claro de esta experiencia?

Dani: All that I take from this experience is positive. In the first place, I managed to paint a miniature of this tiny scale and about this topic (Lord of the Rings). As I said before, this miniature was a reference for me, and I think this was the right moment to paint it (and I think I might be painting another one in the future!). I also think that painting having another miniature as a reference is totally advisable for those who are beginning on this. I would have never been able to get a composition as complete as the original and it makes you value the difficulty there is in creating a composition completely from scratch. Overall, it has been a great experience and as I said before the important think is to have fun while painting it :). Finally, I would like to thank you Rafa for the attention you gave me since the moment you knew I was going to paint this miniature.
