Rumours: GD Spain to be cancelled?

I didn't want to mention it in my blog until it felt absolutely necessary. Like if denying its existence publicly made it less true, less certain. But the thing is, rumours are spreading like an infection, and there seems to be no way around it any more. Let's just deal with it and get it out of my system.

Rumour is that Golden Demon Spain 2013 may be gravely endangered.

The lack of news around Golden Demons have started rivers of comments around the internet. Some ventured that GW might have been thinking of cancelling Games Days and Golden Demon events in Europe, but no one was really sure about which of them. The thing is, as of today, there is still no official confirmation from GW about any dates for Golden Demons (except from US, but they kind of play in a different league) and the more time passes, the worse it looks.

So everything we hear lately is a rumour, and we should take it as it is, just a rumour. But everyone knows how GW deals with their fanbase, how they don't care about it if it doesn't involve short term revenues, and how GDs have been said to be largely unprofitable, especially in Spain, where the economic situation is anything but encouraging. All of this is creating a toxic ambience, and everything points to Spain as the first in line to be cancelled. We are nearly in March and being GD Spain the first GD, there is still no date, place or any news at all about it!

GW employees in Spain are also being very clear. No date for GD Spain doesn't mean anything good. Some even mention the possibility that GD Spain could be marked for death forever. Could have Pablo López been the last Spain Slayersword winner of all time?

These are certainly no good news at all. I'M NOT IN ANY LITTLE BIT HAPPY ABOUT THIS.

Anyway, if there is a little ray of hope, as little as it is, I will hold on to it. These are just rumours after all... aren't they? :( Aren't they?? :_(

Thing is, maybe they want to get as much possible better painters to GD UK? Recent years GD Spain, France and Germany are way better than GD UK.

There's also rumours that not only Spain is dead, but also Italy, and Germany and UK endangered. I've been hearing a lot these days. But everyone seems to be aligned towards Spain being definitely dead.

As long as i don´t hear an official statement from GW, i don´t really care for rumors.

Would be horrible (as this year i wanted to participate in the GD for the first time). But still: rumors!

I genuinely feel that this is just the rumourmill at work. People on the net spend a lot of time bashing everything GW does, and naturally no news regarding GDEsp is being seen as a negative and proof that the whole GD circuit is dying.

I think we need to look back at some of the posts on the net from last year where various people managed to get to speak with Alan Merrett and he gave no indication that there were concerns over the future of GD. What he did talk about, however, was the need to revise the rules across the different events to make a GD standard. We all know what GW can be like and I really wouldn't be surprised if they were waiting to get a new set of rules published before talking about the events.

The silence doesn't make a massive amount of sense, but I don't think it would be particularly unusual for them to be holding their cards close to their chests. Especially with the amount of flack they receive from the trolling internet public.

I suppose another option could be a change in venue or date for the Spanish GD?

I wish that were true... I never listen to rumours... but GW managers in Spain are confirming that GD Spain is dead. And they also mention other countries being in the line of fire. I wish none of this were true!

Last year in italy every ticket went sold... and the GD was much better than some of the past years...

I don't think that it will be cancelled, not here...

Anyway, i hope that they don't cancel the spain gd, it will be a bad sign for the games workshop

French GD 2013 is by the way confirm by lot of intern GW sources to be cancel.
This to be report in Summer in 2014.

We were thinking to the only one, Spain seems to be another one on the list... I hope we'll be the only two...

Hey, I really hope these are just rumours! I really really really dont want the Golden Demon to stop. It would be like a small part of me dying! :(

Last year at the Australian GD. I was lucky to talk to Allan Merrit at the pub after GD for over an hour, maybe 2 (I wasnt counting the time) And I have never met a man that was so enthusiastic for the GD comp. I cant possibly imagine that he would not fight to keep at least some GD's alive around the world! We also talked about the other GD's around the world. And he loved the variation in painting styles etc... The was absolutely no mention of anything that would indicate that the GD's would be cut. He did say he wanted the rules to be very clear and universal for each country, but he said he loved the variety that each country produced with the entries.

Also, one of the people who runs the Games Day here in Australia told me they had 10 of the new styled Slayer Swords to hand out at the future Oz GDs. So take that as you will... but I hope that means that the GD is safe in my country!

It is very sad... and very scary if some GDs are gonna be cut. I have loved the Golden Demon competition so much! And on some days, it has been the only reason I have gotten out of bed, was to work on entries!

Lately I got the fear, that germany will cancel it too. The place in cologne is canceled definitively. We have rumours, that it may be held in bochum, but nothing from the official side.

One of the problems reaching us slowly is the holiday situation. Many of the painters I know take of to come to thos event, but for that it is necessary to know when it is.

SO MANY BAD NEWS!!! OH MAN!!!!!!

It is certainly a bummer for anyone hoping to book time off to travel and/or complete entries... :(

Apparently some people have said that the Australian Games Day has been cancelled also. Whether that means Golden Demon is cancelled also.. I dont know... Here in Oz we had a different styled Golden Demon competition from 2005 - 2010, where it was store run in different rounds, Local, Regional and then National. So fingeres crossed it goes back to that.... but I have a feeling it will just be gone completely.... :(

I wrote GW UK an email today to see what the 'official' word is...

oh :( I was hoping to go to spain and meet all my favourite painters.

if it is because GW are doing bad it just seems like a weird decision to cancel an event that most likely is a very good advertising opportunity, but then again, they rarely seem to make logical decisions.
